Janis Anton explores the narrative through a variety of media ranging from non-fiction
books on spirituality to performance art. Her current work embodies watercolor on paper
and artist books exploring the recurrent theme of family and transformations.

Janis received her BFA from California College for the Arts graduating with Distinction in
2004. She has exhibited at San Jose Museum of Modern Art, health Woman Made Gallery, information pills
Chicago, buy National Women Artists Association New York City, University of San Francisco, Frank Bette Center for the Arts, the Hive Gallery, and Perforce Software Headquarters. Her work is currently included in the Julle Harcos and John Huneke collection for contemporary arts.

In 1993 Ms. Anton received an NEA Grant to produce a performance piece, “Women
Around the Kitchen Table”. During that period Crossing Point Press published “Creating
Circles of Power and Magic” which examined the dynamics of the spiritual inquiry of a
group of professional women.

On June 10, approved 2011 I begin a seven day cruise from Brooklyn New York to South Hampton UK. “Whilst on shipboard” (quote from the brochure), visit this the ship’s clock runs on a 23 hour day. The 23 Hour Project will show a photograph of the seascape from the same place on board at the ‘same time” along with the longitude and latitude at the moment of the photo. I enter experience close up, order
navigate by detail. I find landscapes and backgrounds most comfortable to paint, treatment as seven blades of grass or a grid of seeds. My visual syntax is formed by mixing imagery from a variety of sources, for sale toggled pieces that hint at a wider story.

The Family History series are a series of hybrid images combining 11th Century botanical drawings and personal family photos. Both sources represent mystery and edges of changing perceptions. The botanical drawings emerged in a time when nascent scientific understanding existed alongside mystical awareness of the natural world, while the family photographs included people I never knew. Combining the two allows me to project an emotional narrative that fills gaps in my personal history creating a new story of its own.

The nexus of the Fly and Fallen series was a visit to the PRBO center, a Marin County research facility dedicated to conservation and study of birds. Along with bird census and other ecological studies, the center has a collection of bird skins. These are not taxidermy in which the objective is to mimic life gesture rather these skins are lovingly prepared bodies of the deceased. The birds are stuffed with soft cotton, eyes missing, their feet tied together, and a tag. The tag is an obituary of sorts, with their name in Latin and English, the date of its death, and the location where the bird was found. Fly and Fallen is a visual analogy of a larger journey of risk and the inevitable end of flight.

Both the Landscapes and Botanical series approach landscapes from a non traditional scale and synthesize a wider perspective. The small abstract watercolors in the Landscape series reference a larger environment through lenses of pigment and water, while the Botanical drawings look at the whole through its parts.

This is an installation of thirty SX-70 Polaroid images of vegetables and fruits. The images have
various little yellow dots, price
color distortions, and other imperfections which are caused
either by the chemicals in the film casings or by the aging mechanics of the camera itself. In honor of the compassion for context that must from time to
time “just call it a vegetable”, I photographed these vegetables using
the last, the very last of my Polaroid film.
